| From Dave, from submission
to Era of the Biff |
| Nominated George Piggins,
Ian Roberts and Mario Fenech of SOUTH SYDNEY |
I have followed this club for 30 years.
You hear of the legends over and over but in my 'league
consciousness' I'll
rate 3 of equal importance.
I'll give George Piggins a guernsey, for saving
the club. I owe my league past, present and future to
his
resoluteness and quiet genius. He is a living treasure.
When we were booted
out, I give up league. Now I attend matches-thanks to
George.
Next, I'll choose Ian Roberts. Roberts was a gifted
footballer. He was ahead of the
pack in every respect. He was strong and feared.
But the greatest player who ever played for Souths is
Mario Fenech. No other player who has
pulled on the vermillion and myrtle, has played with as
much passion. At
his peak 84-91,he was incomparable. He was constantly
overlooked for
test and origin selection (although he did play a few
games in the latter
series).I once saw a young and immature Mario try to belt
the crap out
of a seasoned Ken Stewart at Redfern after Stewart (now
back at
Souths)took up an offer from the eels. That was sheer
bravery and gross
foolishness. They smashed each other and kept playing
(as they used to do in
the biff days). Mario played hard but always fair. |
