Title: ... Memories of Keith Barnes and a Great Balmain Tigers win 1958

I can remember a memorable Match of the Day played on the Sydney Cricket Ground between Balmain and Manly on April 12, 1958, won by Balmain by 21-15 with Keith Barnes the hero of the day kicking penalty goals from all over the field and keeping Balmain in the game.

What was memorable about this match was that Balmain finished with 10 men on the field against 13 but still won the game!!

This was in the era when injured players couldn't be replaced, so the 3 Balmain players who were missing had been injured seriously and couldn't continue playing. Balmain played for a long period with 11 against 13, losing another player near the end of the match.

The editorial in the following week's Rugby League News stated, "Last Saturday's 'Rorke's Drift' effort at the Cricket Ground fully merited the ovation given Balmain's final 10 men as they trudged off the field after winning against tremendous odds."

Story by Allan Garrick, Balmain, Australia.
