Title: ... p110 - Memories of Charlie Pawsey - playing against visiting Italians. by Colin Grimshaw, Leigh UK

Supporting leigh as a boy meant i got to see Rex Mossop, Trevor Allen, Charlie Pawsey, Joe Egan, Gentleman Jim Ledgard and others.

Charlie,s hardman displays have been well documented elsewhere, but one incient i recall was during a match at Kirkhall Lane when Leigh were entertaining a touring italian club side (yes there was such a thing although very short lived).

Charlie was captain for the day and set the crowd buzzing when leigh were awarded a penalty and he placed the ball for the attempt at goal. All the italians gathered beneath the crossbar and Charlie who i never saw before or after kick at goal booted the ball straight into the hands of the leigh winger who just walked over the line and placed the ball down for a try. Their wasnt a defender within 40 yds of him.

I last saw Charlie when I was playing in a bowls comp at Patricroft and he was there watching me.

What a turnaround
