HE has already had a road named after him and his name on the side of a bus, but now rugby league legend Neil Fox has a whole housing estate named in his honour.

The former Wakefield Trinity player has unveiled two show homes which form part of Foxfield Park in New Sharlston.

The 58-home Taylor Wimpey development is on the site of the former colliery, where Mr Fox worked as a fitter before pursuing his sporting career. He grew up in Sharlston Common, attended the village school and practised his kicking on the fields of Sharlston Working Men’s Club.

Mr Fox, 72, said he was delighted to have an area named after him and brothers Don and Peter.

He said: “I’m over the moon to have been part of what is proving to be a great development in an area that I love so much.

“I have lots of fond memories of Sharlston and only moved out when I married Molly 50 years ago.”

The England veteran, who holds the world record for scoring 6,220 points, joined Mayor of Wakefield Ros Lund for a VIP unveiling of the just-finished Woodleigh and Durham properties on High Street.

Previously a street off Denby Dale Road was named Fox Way and in 2009 Arriva Yorkshire named a fleet of 13 buses after rugby league legends, including the Neil Fox MBE.

Mr Fox, who was awarded the Freedom of the City in April last year, signed for Wakefield Trinity in 1955 at the age of 16, and played his last game for the club on March 10, 1974.

Foxfield Park will consist of two, three and four bedroom homes which are described as “intimate” and “friendly” and “offering all the convenience of modern living, in a peaceful setting.”
