Title: ... p68 - Bumper Farrell - memories from a young sailor - Col Maybury

I was a young soldier in 1958 savoring Sydney. One night in the "Rock and Roll," the Macquarie Hotel in Woolloomooloo.

There were 400 screamers in the public bar. The band was on a raised stage in the top corner to keep them safe from the melee.

A prostitute was raffling her favors for 2 shillings a ticket. What's the prize love, Me darlin' Me.

Suddenly there was quiet and a resounding whisper raced around the room in the sudden hush. Bumper, Bumper, it ran.

All eyes turned on me. 799 of them. There was a sailor with an eye patch. Shit I thought and slowly turned.

There just behind me was Detective Sergeant Frank Bumper Farrell in a dark suit flanked by two equally robust detectives in the same style suits their dark hats pulled low and arms folded across broad chests.  Bumper's eyes looked deep into my soul then the three began a menacing journey around the room, searching faces in deathly silence.

They left through a side door. 400 people exhaled and the band played at full crash.

The legendary captain of Newtown and King of the Cross was on his beat.
