from Quigs "As mentioned previously, I am not a rugby league historian, a rugby league expert. I am just a lover of this era of Rugby League." ... This is a recollection of some of the battles, and the trench warfare that I, and others watched over time. Some are matches that I was told about, or read about.

The 1973 Grand Final saw Manly Warringah defending their title which they won for the first time in 1972 when they defeated Parramatta.

Manly were the raging hot favourites to defeat the Tommy Bishop led Sharks who were tasting their first ever Grand Final after being admitted to the competition in 1967.

(As reported in the History of Australian Rugby League)

Manly won again in 1973, defeating the Tommy Bishop-led Cronulla team in what is still claimed today as the most brutal grand final of them all.

Bobby Fulton, brilliant and unpredictable, bobbed up for two tries in the 10 - 7 victory. (Bloody Fulton) Cronulla's forward pack included Cliff Watson, Ken Maddison, Greg Pierce, John Maguire, Grahame Bowen and Ron Turner, and yet they were still at long odds to upset the favourites.

With Bishop scheming all the way, the first half was a running battle, a bitter conflict that almost brought about Manly's undoing. Manly's English lock, Mal Reilly, damaged his hip and had to leave the field in the first half. Players continued their battle with each other, the pockets of skirmishes often at different corners of the field. In the end the dazzle of Bob Fulton prevailed.

Boys will be boys. All hell breaks loose as Cliff Watson and Peter Peters clash in the 1973 grand final. Incident instigator, Cronulla captain Tommy Bishop, second from right, seems to be looking for a place to hide.
