The Great Britain touring side of 1962 were set to play against the might of the St George Powerhouse at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

The Saints where well on their way with their run of 11 straight premierships. They had won every season since 1956 and in 62 is seemed like a formality that they were going to win yet again.

This game was played midweek and four days after Australia's dramatic 18-17 win in the third test.

Both teams fielded the strongest possible playing strength.

Saints had Graham, Lumsden, Brown, Gasnier, King, Clay, O'Bryan, Raper, Provan(c), Ryan,Porter, Walsh, Wilson, (res) Riley and Armstrong.

Great Britain: Round, Boston, Ashton(c), Fox, Southward, Bolton, Murphy, Turner,Huddart, Edgar, Herbert, Sayer, McTigue, (res) Carlton and Gilfedder.

Mass truancy, sickies and early knockoffs was the order of the day as nearly 60,000 packed the ground to watch the game. (If you were one of these let me know your story)

St George hit the front early in the game and the crowd thought that the Mighty Dragons would "murder" the Poms. As descibed in the History of Australian Rugby League, "But for the next 55 minutes of football, St george was twisted and taunted by a far better team. Saints did not score again. Great Britain moved into gear scoring seven tries in a 33 - 5 victory. Never before or again during the era would the might of St George be treated with such contempt. So seriously did Great Britain take the match that brilliant half back Alex Murphy took the field with a badly injured arm which he later discovered was broken.
