Memorable Match No 09

1970 GRAND FINAL, SOUTHS -V- MANLY

Souths win and the courage of John Sattler

From the History of Australian Rugby League.

One of the best examples of great courage in the 1970's was that of renowned South Sydney tough man, Johnny Sattler.

Satts, South's Captain, refused to leave the field in the 1970 Grand Final against Manly at the Sydney Cricket Ground after his jaw was broken in two places three minutes into the match.

A punch from behind collected him flush on the jaw. When Sattler realised he had been injured he propped near South's dual international winger Michael Cleary and said to him ; "Mike, hold on to me...don't let me fall. I don't want these bastards (Manly) to know I'm crook.

Sattler composed himself and tore back into the rucks, taking the ball up strongly and doing his share of the tackling. It wasn't until halftime that the rest of his teammates even knew that he was playing with a smashed jaw. Sattler pleaded to be allowed to return for the second half. His wish was granted and souths turned a 12 - 6 lead into a commanding 23 - 12 win.

Two months after the Sattler incident the NSW Rugby League outlawed head high tackles.

( I watched this game from the famous Hill of the Sydney Cricket Cround, do you have any memories of this match.)
