Memorable Match No 13

1973 THIRD TEST

Australia went into the Ashes deciding third test depleted and understrength. The Roos had lost their Captain Coach in Graeme Langlands and the Vice Captain Bob McCarthy.

Langlands had been replaced in the second test by Graham Eadie, a brilliant 19 year old fullback from the Manly Club. Wombat Eadie starred in that test and five goals in the upset win.

After great Britain had already won the first test by 21 -12 it was all down to the decider at the Wilderspoon ground.

Ken Maddison scores one of his two tries in the 1973 third test

Australia selected Tom Raudonikas as its Captain for the game. And the 1973 Rothmans Medal Winner Cronulla's Ken Maddison had come into the side to replace the injured McCarthy who had dislocated his shoulder in scoring the only try of the second test match.

Artic cold conditions and an ice covered surface greeted the Aussies for the third test. Officials laid 18 tonnes of straw over the pitch in an effort to reduce the ice. Ground staff placed 44 gallon drums of hot coals on the surface in effort to thaw it out. All soccer matches and Race meetings had already been called off. Bob Fulton was quoted as saying it was without doubt the worst conditions he had ever played in.

The Aussies were brilliant in this game and lead by the Souths tackling machine Gary Stevens who tackled the poms into the dirt (and ice). They showed no fear or concern for self preservation.

Australia ran in five tries to one in their 15 - 5 demolition. Maddison was at his brilliant best and running riot, and so was Beetson, who was awarded Man of the series.

Great Britain Captain Clive Sullivan was quoted after the match as saying, "It was rutted with ice in parts (the ground) and I don't think our boys relished playing on it".

( I remember watching this match live on TV and I believe it was watching this game that was the catalyst for me fulfulling my dream of touring Great Britain to watch an ashes series. This I did in 1990 with the RLW Touring party ---- Oh the memories)
