Parramatta finally got to step onto the winners podium in 1981 after defeating the Warren Ryan coached Newtown Jets by the tune of 20 points to 11.

It was an emotional time for the Eels fans as they had been so close on several occasions. But the legendary Supercoach Jack Gibson was at his deadpan best when his victory speech was "ding dong the witch is dead."

One of the heroes of the day for Parra was the veteran Bob the Bear O'Reilly.

Newtown were led by the ferocius Tom Raudonikas, and early in the second half it looked like Tommy's boys would be victorious and maintain Parra's poor record in Grand Finals. The game was marred (highlighted) by an old fashioned all in brawl.

With the starstudded Parramatta, led by the newcomers Kenny, Sterling, Ella blended with the old experienced hard heads of O'Reilly, Cronin and Price they slowly over powered the gallant Jets.

This was the first ever Grand Final played on a Sunday, and it also heralded the start of the brilliant coaching career of Warren Wokka Ryan. (Now an ABC Rugby League Radio broadcaster).

After the game Raudonikas was questioned about the Grand Final brawl and he said that if they could guarantee a blue like that every game then they would get another 20,000 through the gate.

FOOTNOTE. After the Grand Final victory the Parra supporters celebrated the event by burning down the old Cumberland Oval Grandstand that night.
