From Yan Taylor, Widnes, England.

Received 5/8/2006

Regarding hard games from the past, I Can't sit by and not mention the tour match between Widnes V Australia on the 1973 british tour.

This was a brutal game of rugby league, with both teams guilty of fowl play.

Things got so much out of hand that the referee called the two captains together to try and calm both teams down.

Two of the worst incidents came almost on the stroke of half time when at a play the ball on the 38th minute, Bob McCarthy kicked and then stamped all over Reg Bowden giving the referee no alternative but to send him off. One minute later Aussie hard man John O'Neill head butted Bob Blackwood in the tackle, only for Blackwood to retaliate and butt the Kangaroo back.

When the dust finally settled Blackwood was sent from the field while O'Neill was carried from the field with a broken jaw.

The Australians scored two tries through McCarthy and Bobby Fulton plus a goal from Graham Langlands.

Widnes played well against the tourists though and managed to score a try through Tommy Warburton, with Ray Dutton adding the conversion after an earlier penalty.

The Chemics went in at the break 7-8 down.

In the second half things went against Widnes, losing Ray Dutton, Big Jim Mills, Alan Prescott and John Foran through injuries.

The Aussies ran five tries through, Langlands two, Tommy Ruadonikis, Orr and Stevens.

A ten man Chemics would not lie down though and forward Dave Macko scored the last try of the game.
