'Lord' Ted does it again!
(Reproduced with permission from the Saints Immortals website- Quigs recommends that you pay the Immortals a visit...)
One game against Cronulla in 1973 always sticks in my mind. It was at the Sydney Cricket Ground and the referee, Mick Norton was from England—he did know how to ref.
It was an absolute thriller of a game and the scores were locked at half time. Cronulla scored just after the break to take a 3 point lead and I can tell you it was nail biting stuff for the rest of the second half and I thought we were gone for sure. But, with only 5 minutes to go, 'Lord' Ted won the game.
He took a great ball close to Saints' line and burst through the opposition to race down the field. The ball went to Johnny Chapman on to Johnny Peard back to Chapman and then on to Rocket who scored—Chang converted.
It was one of the best tries you could see but it all started with Goodwin.
Great story Billy Hudson.
FROM QUIGS..... I think I was also at this
game. And, if my memory serves me correctly, Harry Eden scored
a big try for saints too. What stuck in my mind was that Saints
were able to target the poor defencive skills of Sharks winger
Ray Corcoran and they scored three tries down his side. The
Captain Coach of the Sharks, Tommy Bishop dropped a bombshell
next week dropping 2nd Rower John Maguire instead of Corcoran.
He's reasoning was simple.....we all knew Rays defence wasn't
the best and it was Maguires job to cover Ray.

One of the best performances I can remember from a Saints man was not from an Immortal. It was a game from 'Lord' Ted Goodwin.
I was just a kid sitting in the mostly St George Sheridan Stand at the SCG for the semi against Manly in 1975. Ted scored a remarkable try by chipping ahead, and then regathering by juggling the ball on the fingertips of his vertical right arm - all while swerving around the Manly fullback Graeme Eadie - then pulling the ball in and winning the race to the Scoreboard Hill corner!
It remains one of the most remarkable and exciting tries that I have seen right to this day. Too bad backflips were not the done thing in this era.
Ted followed this great try up by rescuing Saints from great pressure with a series of line dropouts that bamboozled Ray Branighan. Twice Ted dropped the ball over Branighan's head and found touch and a third dropout landed short of Branighan, and bounced over his head head into touch.
Only the amazing "Lord Ted" could have come up with these plays.

Ted Goodwin was playing for Willagee in the Western
Australia RL and this lady on the sideline was calling him all the
names under the sun.
As he stuck his head in to lock the scrum the women gave him another
mouthful at which he stood up and looked straight at the lady and said
"how come all the ugly ones abuse me"
I think the two sides couldn't do anything for a while as they rolled
around in laughter and the referee couldn't pack the scrum.
The woman shut up for the rest of the game
