KEITH HOLMAN MAKES WESTS TIGERS
TEAM OF THE CENTURY
From West Tigers website - to visit click

On the 20th April 1908 the first official game of Rugby League
was played in the Sydney Premiership. The combatants were the
Western Suburbs Magpies and the Balmain Tigers. Since that time,
there have been a total of 15 Premierships won between the clubs
and a host of State of Origin, Kangaroo and Premiership stars
produced. A wealth of legendary moments played out by some of
the true legends of the game. To celebrate the history and prestige
associated with two of Australia's most famous Rugby League
Teams, as well as embrace their recent unification into the
Wests Tigers, it is time to celebrate the.
Wests Tigers TEAM OF THE CENTURY
A panel of judges spanning the different eras from both Clubs
will select nominees according to strict criteria. The panel
comprised Keith Barnes (Balmain), Kevin Humphreys (Balmain),
John 'Chow' Hayes (Wests), Rick Wayde (Wests) and Ian Heads
(Independent). A Western Suburbs and a Balmain Tigers team
has been selected by the panel representing each club, before
the unenviable task of selecting the best combined team took
place.

Keith Holman played for Wests, NSW & Australia.
He coached Wests and he refereed upto the level of a 1st grade Grand
Final and Test matches.
He has another honour that most people do not seem to know about.
Keith had a junior club named after him. The Holman
JRLFC existed through the 70's in the old Western Suburbs junior league
area.
It was based at Henley Park, Enfield. The colours were yellow with
a blue shoulder saddle, and the emblem was oval shaped with a kangaroo,
a football, a kiwi, a rooster & a lion ; signifying that Keith played
for Australia against New Zealand, France & England.
A great honour & one that I've never heard repeated.

Keith Holman a participant in this game and
later to become a first grade referee himself was quoted as
saying about this match and referee Aub Oxford.
At the time he believed that the Referee Aub Oxford had done
the right thing in abandoning the match.
"They (the English) were out to get Churchill,
Noel Pidding and me. But when I became a referee, I realised
that the referee might have handled it better by sending three
or four players off. That would have stopped it." Keith

EARLY MAGPIE MEMORIES FROM ROY - Magpies
1948
the first match I watched Wests play was at
Pratten park, I guess it was about 1949, I was about
10, they were playing
Balmain and wests won by bout 50 points, I think.
I remember Keith Holman being immaculatly dressed and groomed,
and Frank Stanmore playing alongside him, they were majic together, they
seemed to read each others minds.
I followed them through from that time going
to all three grades and
knew all the players in all three grades.
