Quigs - Remarks and a Story on Ryan by John Sattler.

Told to me in 1990

28/10/2004

I remember sitting behind the paddo end goalposts of the SCG whenthe Ryan Lead Canterbury Berries (were they still Berries then) ended the 11 year run of Saints. Ryan was Captain of the side. It was the year me Sharkies joined the comp. 1967.

We had a sports night up here (Emu Park, coast Central Queensland) in early 1990 and Satts was asked who was the toughest player he had played against and you guessed it, the name Kevin Kandos Ryan was mentioned. Sattler told the story of how he was lining up a young Canterbury winger who he knew was about to step inside and unsuspectingly into his path. Satts told it like this. He was about gorilla this unsuspecting inexperienced winger when he heard the voice he recognized as Ryan running a few paces behind him.

" I wouldn't do that if I was you " boomed the voice. Satts then decided he would tackle the winger in the contempory manner for respect of his own well being because he knew that Ryan would get even at some stage later inthe game.

The great man Sattler who had to prove his toughness to no man had that much respect for Ryan and his ability to legally inflict pain through his ferocious tackling that he changed his mind and style.

Kenin Ryan as a student at Nudgee College where the boxing ring took pride of place with the exception of the First 15, won the Year 10 boxing title only to maintain he would win if put against the year 11 and year 12 champions for that same year.

The Christian Brothers did match him and he won.

Ryan would win the heavy weight Qld title two years after leaving school and was down to represent Australia in the Olympic Games in boxing when a Christian Brother refused him boxing coaching saying,"Your brain is too good"

Ryan went to St. George instead and only an uninformed footballer was foolish enough to through him a punch.

There was the odd occasion; one such occasion, Ryan took a full blooded punch which had its origines from the 'back of burke' and which drew the response from Ryan, as the scrum broke up.."Not bad, yours is to come."

Then there was the bulldog forward late to training..Ryan decken him.

This same giant of a man in body had the same size soul..teaching religion in the State School system of Sydney.

The reporter from the SMH who wrote of Ryan, "The only man he had ever met, upon whose shoulders you can confortably have breakfast' had sound perceptions.

God Bless you "Tick" "Kandos" Ryan, may your recovery be forever.
