From the Quigs.....

I first set eyes on this wild man when he was playing for Eden in the Group 16 competition on the far south coast of New South Wales.

He was an ablsolute ballistic front rower who appeared possessed. The side was captained and coached by his older brother Gerrard. Gerrard was a fine player too, but at the time was battling cronic leg and knee injuries which hampered his play.

Eden slayed em that year and easily won the competition.

I would love to hear from some of the Eden folk who where around during those times. For the Edenites only --- the Late Fred Woods, the old Eden harbour pilot was my wifes Uncle. The main bar of the Eden Fishermans club is named after Freddy Woods.

About 86

Playing for the Dogs in the Mid Eighties..about '86 I think.Dogs have a very hard pack of forwards.Langmack Folkes Gillespie Battese Tunks Bugden Kelly and more..

Anzac Day v Souths.Souths have a host of hard men in their forwards too. Davidson Fenech Boyle etc.

First tackle of the game at the SCG Kelly goes high and is sent off.(see pic above)

As he is running off the field he passes the Bugler who had just finished playing the Last Post and opens the gate for him.

A similar period of his career he is facing the judiciary and is charged with making a high, late tackle..he tells the judiciary panel.."well,I got there as fast as I could"

I loved watching him play especially when he came down to Sydney to play for the Jets and his socks down, jersey out dress and his no holds bar approach was very popular.

I remember him laying out Geoff Gerard at Henson Park one day for a wag in the crowd to yell out "Throw some dirt over him"

A Jets favourite.

My vote for Peter Kelly is due to a number of reasons but mostly the Grand Finals of 1984-84 when Warren Ryan told the players, 'when the going gets tough, just follow Kel', it did, they did and they won.

I watched peter kelly tear apart st george in the 85 grand final he had greame wyn on his back in the 1st 10min and never took a backward step all game.

His perfect pass to chris mortimer to set up our only try showed his ball skills matched his toughness i even gave him a hug during his lap of honour.

A true hard man of league

When Peter Kelly first moved from Eden (I think) to Sydney a journo wrote him up as 'Texas, bigger than Dallas' as the Bulldogs were to take on Wests that weekend.

Anyway much was written in the build up to the game about the clash of the old bull v's the young bull.

Kel told me that the first time he took the ball up he lifted his eyes off the ball and saw Dallas, Bob Cooper and co coming at him and dropped the ball at Dallas' feet to which Dallas said "Shit yourself didn't ya Texas".

I recall Penrith v Souths, Les Davidson planted one fair on Peter Kelly's chin.

Kel didn't even flinch, he just looked at the ref as if to say "Did you see that?".

The hit would have dropped just about any other player.
