Mark Geyer was by far the most intimidating forward to play NRl footy.

If only he realised how good a footballer he was he might not of been considered so mad.

But saying that i LOVED the way

Interview with Wally Lewis.

ABC RADIO INTERVIEW WITH WALLY LEWIS AND HIS AUTOBIOGRAPHER ADRIEN MCGREGOR.

The King was interviewed during this particular radio show and the interview started with Wally talking about his run in with MG during the 1991 Famous State of Origin Clash.

The King described how the big fellow (MG) was sent out to upset the Maroons during the famous clash.

Wally described one particular incident when he alleged that MG ran straight towards the Queensland fullback Paul Hauff with a 'cocked' elbow. Wally described that if the point of contact would of been a little bit this way or that way then there was a possiblilty of a fatality on the paddock.

Wally stated that there were three glaring indiscretions by Geyer in the first half that if it happend in a club game would of resulted in the offender being sent off.

The final incident in the first half resulted one of the wildest brawls in the history of State of Origin.

At the completion of the game MG was congratulated by a certain NSW official for his efforts, Wally said. The Queensland camp and particularly the QLd Coach was seething at the time.

Subsequently they lodged an official complaint against Geyer and the manner he played the game.

Geyer was later suspended for 10 weeks, Wally said.

This was the famous State of Origin clash were the images of Wally and MG pushing, shoving, glaring and baring teeth as referee Manson tried to prize them apart.

I've seen some mad and bad men in my life but none more intimidating than Geyer.

Great site and keep the hard men of our game at the forefront.

MG on his second first grade match - playing Western Suburbs as an 18 year old.

Penrith

Geyer found life in the big time to be anything but smooth sailing in his second game, against West at Orana Park in Campbelltown (NSW). The Penrith youngster had the crowd at boiling point after crash-tackling West Forward John Elias in an awesome but legal hit - and the popular Magpie didn't wake up until several minutes later in the dressing room.

"I just lots the plot that day, "Geyer remembers. "I was still trying to find my feet in firstgrade, their old hands, like Bruce Bruiser Clark and Ian Schubert were baiting me, and I was copping heaps from the crowd. I hit Elias hard and even though it wasn't an illegal tackle, they were after my blood.

At one stage I called Bruiser (Bruce Clark) a fat old man and he chased me 20 metres across the field trying to belt me. Royce Simmons had bagged him earlier and I thought, if Royce can do it, so can I. I was just a kid at that stage and didn't realise you had to earn some respect before you could do things like that on the field. i was this 18 year old kid who thought he was king of the heap. Tim Sheens ended up having to take me off early in the second half - I was just making a fool of myself. After the game all these Wests supporters wanted to beat the crap out of me behind the dressing rooms. So I hid in the bar. I wanted to make myself scarce but the first bloke I saw in there was Bruiser. I tried to walk past unnoticed but he shoved a schooner into my hand and said, "I think you could use this, kid".

West front Row, Bruiser Clarke, Hooker Arthur Mountier, and the late Dallas Donnelly.

"So I had a beer with him and he turned out to be a champion bloke. I felt a bit bad about what I said to him out there, but never got the chance to play against him again. I learned probably more that day than any other in football - Bruiser really knocked me down a peg or two."

"I was given the all clear by one of the NSW hierarchy before the game to get out there and get into them." "So I went out and followed instructions. And I ended up copping a six week suspension for it ... to say I was bitter wouldn't even begin to describe how I felt" - Mark Geyer on State of Origin No2 - 1991.

I watched Geyer tear apart anyside he played in the late 80's early ninty's, unfortunately his unpredictability
(madness) made him somewhat of a liability.
