Living in the Manly area since 1961 as a kid,
Bobby Fulton was a hero to all us youngsters.
Ive got vague memories of a Test match he played against England
in the early seventies (I think)that
I saw on TV.
Bobby had just been tackled and was about to play the ball.
Phil Lowe (who ended up at the Sea Eagles himself), was marking
him and swung a punch that missed by miles. A real air swing.
Fulton went
down as though he had been shot.
Poor Lowe got sent off and as he was leaving the field Fulton
got up and heckled him as he was leaving the
ground.

Bob Fulton: I played with him at Easts
Bob Fulton was to me the ultimate professional athlete.
He trained like no other at footy training stayed later like
40 mins doing sprints then had to go back to his family at
Manly where he lived etc he never let his team down in any
game and was always about
football and a great family man.
One day we were playing St George at Leichardt Oval...we were
struggling and he was Capt and was playing lockforward that
night. I was at fullback and after a scrum he got trampled
on with the studs cutting a big gash over his right eye lid...he
was in pain and discomfort and could not see thru it and played
with one eye open the entire game but he held the team up
and stopped 2 certain tries with cover defending tackles got
the team focused and we won that night...I did not appreciate
his professionalism fully until after my retirement years
but he was a real insipration to me and the players.
Regards
Joe Reaiche

"Bozo has had more influence on me than any coach. He understands
the game better than the rest and he isn't a ranter or a raver.
He uses and urges players to use their specialist skills. I
enjoy playing in teams where he is in charge and I'm fortunate
to have had his influence through the major part of my career."

"I was very happy at Manly, and I think Ken Arthurson
had a lot to do with that. He was the man that gave the place
its harmony. He kept all the good players together, many of
them stayed for a lot less than they were offered from other
clubs. You only have to look at the other clubs to see why
Manly is so successful. The others are always chopping and
changing with players and officials, whereas Manly has a whole
host of blokes who played more than 200 or more first grade
games. Thompson, Fulton, Randall, Vautin, Bob Batty,
Freddie Jones, Max Krilich and myself - that's a lot of people
in the '200' club."

Rex
Mossop,
(nominating his best-ever Sea Eagles player)
"Bob Fulton without a doubt. He was a special player,
one who always played to the very limit of his ability. He
was tough, he was competitive, he could defend as well as
attack. He was good at everything he did. I'd have no hesitation
in putting him in my top five players ever."

Geoff
Toovey,
(on Bob Fulton):
"People like Boze have an aura about them that creates
positive attitudes to everyone within the club. With Boze there
was always a great feeling around the place that you had something
special ... an air of confidence you felt other clubs didn't
have."

In 1963, the 1st test was a night game at Wembley and Gasnier
was at his imperious best. He's still the greatest centre I've
seen. He never looked as though he was moving, but nobody could
get near him. He had class to burn. Then we had the 50 - 12
game at Swinton. The die was cast and I think it gave Australian
players the self belief to upset history. Since then of course
we've only won one test series (1970), but I believe it was
won on the back of my favourite all time player Malcom
Reilly; and Roger
Millward. They were the difference on that Tour.
Many of the series around that time were close and different
players stood just above to make the difference. I believe that
in 67 it was a John
Raper /
Ron Coote combination as the game breakers. The
test when they won in the snow typified the Australian never-say-die
spirit.
In 73 Artie
was head and shoulders above the rest.
In 74 it was Ron Coote's
famous tackle on Steve Nash that broke our resolve.
In 78 we would have won that series but for the half back combo
of Tom R
and Bobby Fulton.
Fulton was the finest captain of a touring team that I've seen
and he lead from the front. Most of the players were young and
inexperienced and making their first Tours, but players like
Rod Reddy
and Craig Young
came up trumps. It was also the best test debut I have seen
in the decider at Headingley. Les
Boyd tortured us for an hour and came off injured,
but by then the game and the series were run.
Apart from 1990 when we was within a minute of squaring the
series, but for Ricky Stuart's breakout and Big Mal
Meninga; since then we've been an embarrassment
since 1978. But then we don't have players of the calibre of
Reilly,
Huddart, McTigue,
Millward,
Ashton, Murphy,
Mick Sullivan.
Personally, I deride the modern game. The scrums are a joke
and the 10 metre rule has killed off the great ball playing
backs like Murphy
and Millward
in the British game. Same in the forwards. In those days you
had to have the skills to break defences, because they were
stood on top of you. Artie
was the best ball playing forward I've seen and McTigue
wasn't far behind.

Heard another good story about the 78 Tour, don't know if it's
true. Apparently the Oz tourists had some wrestling matches
as part of training, and that they sometimes got out of hand
with a bit of claret showing. The two strongest in these comps
were Tommy T and Bob
Fulton; the two halfbacks.
What I'm certain of is that the Australians wouldn't have won that
series without Fulton and Raudonikis. They were absolutely terrific and led
from the front. The rest of the players were very inexperienced and had
few caps between them.
Finally, I'm sure I saw in Rugby League Week that we used to get from
Oz, that TR did indeed say he was looking forward to playing a hard game
after the tests in '79.
