I was at Belmore Oval the day Henry Tatana finally
scrored a try.
Berries fans would remenber 'big Henry' fondly- the rugged Kiwi goal
kicking prop, a kicker in the traditional Australian fashion- torpedo
position on a handful of sand, toe pocked with a straight run up. Before
John Gray brought 'around the corner'to Australia.
A hard working toiler, for me a small boy, Henry was one of my first
heroes. He was no show pony, a man's man. I'll always rememeber,
sitting with my family in our traditional position in line with the tryline
at the Stuart st end of the field, Henry with three men on his back
reaching out and planting the ball over the line one handed- in the days
when balls were made of pigskin and shined. Big Henry had finally
scored.
