Bobby came to Oldham in 1993 having been signed
from Illawarra. He was and most definatley still is the most expensive,
top class signing we made in recent times. He arrived at Watersheddings
under a media circus and it didn't take long for us to understand why.
His leadership was first class, he had undoubted ability and the
courage to go with it.
With around 10 games of the season left he became club player coach
after the departure of Andy Goodway to Wigan. At the time the team was
struggling with no cohesion and a total lack of discipline. Bobby changed
all that and although we ended the season with loss (at home to
champions elect Wigan) we managed to avoid the drop with some memorable
victories the highpoint being a win over St Helens at Knowsley road.
What sticks in my mind however was when Bobby was practically concussed
in a three man tackle in an away game at Leigh. He was not for coming
off at all and his commitment to the cause in that game made everyone
realise that here was a guy who would put his body on the line for the
club and its supporters.
Overall a fantastic player (our gain WAS Illawarra's loss) with heart,
guts and a steely determination. He only stayed at our club for around
12 months but in that time he became a legend.
