Memories of bill ashurst - Wigan Pieman
wrote,
billy deserves to be in the hardman vote as he is
recognised as one of the hardest guys to play for
wigan.
He used to get sent off on a regular basis for fighting.
his last game of rugby was ironically against wigan
whilst coach of runcorn highfield. due to a players
strike billy named himself as a sub for the cup
game although approaching 40,and was sent off after
10 seconds for flattening andy goodway in his first
involvement in the game.
he still lives in wigan, became a born again christian
whilst landlord of the anderton arms ,where he read
the bible over the bar to trouble makers before
taking them outside and knocking hell out of them.
he now lives in the ince district of wigan and is
crippled with knee problems

Players name for story: Bill Ashurst
You mention Bill Ashurst as being "clobbered" during
a Saints match but nothing of him in the hard mans
list.
I heard that he was playing for Great Britain in
Australia and he got sent off. No surprise there
but his mother invaded the pitch and hit the referee
with her hand bag!!

With reference to M47 and Bill Ashurst, never saw
the guy play but was flicking through the sky channels
recently as you do and came across him giving an
interview on a Christian TV Channel.
He spoke about his time in Australia when he was
signed for a world record fee by Penrith for £17,000.
He made his debut and wanted to make an impression
and to give the fans their moneys worth as he cost
a lot of money back in 1973.
The only problem was his hooker would not pass the
ball to him and this only got Bill more and more
aggravated. It came to a head when Bill decided
enough was enough, at the next scrum he knocked
out his own hooker inside the scrum.
The referee didn't know who'd done it and the player
was carried off and replaced.
Bill proceeded to play a blinder and Penrith won
the match.
When his coach realised what Bill had done after
the match he told him to do it again in the future
if it meant Penrith won the game....

Stevo on the left playing for the Penrith Panthers
in Australia.
the unfortunate hooker was 'Stevo' Mike Stephenson
the Sky TV commentator who unfortunately UK viewers
have to put up with every week !!!
Good on ya Bill !!!
