A Memorable Matches list without the 1989 Winfield Cup Grand Final is a sad state of affairs indeed. The Raiders, written off by most even before the kick off, were certainly gone at half time.

This side had finished FOURTH after all, back in the days of the top 5.

Try telling all this to John "Chicka" Ferguson though. I will never forget Laurie Daley gathering the ball and giving it to Chicka who, missing a boot, scored the try to send an entire city into raptures.

Steve Jackson's try was just the icing on the cake. Ian Maurice's commentary "what strength, what power, what a grand final" still a very fond memory.

Another magic moment from that match, featured a real hardman, again missing from your list: Dean Lance's tackle on so-called tough guy Steve Roach.

Lance was all about technique, regularly flooring blokes much bigger with esquisite timing.

The story of him thumping his team-mate Sam Backo at training after Backo started to get a bit too big for his boots is not hard to believe either.
