The Jacksonville Axemen Rugby League Club was founded by Daryl "Spinner" Howland and Drew Slover in 2006 to compete in the American National Rugby League (AMNRL).

Spinner, who grew up in Queensland, Australia and has played Rugby League for 27 years moved to the USA when Super League America was announced in 1996. He has had over 15 appearances for the USA Tomahawks and has been involved with the development of Rugby League in the USA for many years.

He had been trying to get a team to Jacksonville for many years but it was always a case of finding the financial backing to allow the travel that was an obstacle. With help from Drew Slover and the Support of our Title Sponsor, T-Mobile, and others we raised the funds to allow the expansion team to become a reality and so the Axemen where born.

The Jacksonville Axemen mark the first true national expansion for the AMNRL as we need to fly our team for all of our away games and every team that plays us will need to fly to Jacksonville for our home games. This is a major step for Rugby League in the United States.

We have partnered with the University of North Florida to rent there 9000 seat stadium for all our home games and with the help of our supporters and sponsors we have reached a level of Professionalism that is above some more well know sports in the USA.

We have players from a vast background on the team. Some who have played Rugby League before, others who are from local Rugby Union clubs and of course those that have played more traditional American Sports such as Gridiron, Lacrosse, basketball, etc.

With 28 guys on our roster and a training schedule that is 3 days per week plus mandatory weight sessions we are trying to implement a real since of professional attitude into our players. We have also made ground breaking steps in how we approach our commitment to sponsors.

We are very focused on the fact that without their backing we would not exist. We do as much for our sponsors as we do for our players. We ensure that every opportunity given to us to expose, promote and advertise them is taken and the most is made of that opportunity. Everything from the invitation to visit them on our website to the constant reminder to our players that they need to patronize them as often as they can, is always part of our approach.

We are constantly looking for sponsorships or all types from individual player sponsors and specific item sponsors to larger team sponsors. We have approached the sponsorship task with a great deal of flexibility and have found that we can secure many items that we may have had to pay for by allowing sponsors to brand the item with their on logos and putting those items in the hands of our fans at home games.

Our season is played during the summer months so that we do not conflict with the NFL season or other larger sports here in the USA. We play a regular season of 10 games over a 11 week period with each opponent being played at home and away.

Although our immediate goal is to be able to play at a competitive level with all the current teams in the AMNRL we have plans for some future events.

We have looked a the possibility of staging a once a year match similar to the current state of origin in Australia. We would stage a North vs.. South game being played as the Blues and the Grays. Players would be selected based on their place of birth either above or below the Mason Dixon line.

We are also looking into the possible expansion for the 2007 season to Atlanta Georgia and Orlando Florida. These cities are both Hub airports for many of the airlines in the USA and by having teams there it will dramatically decrease the costs for all travel.

We are developing relationships with the city of Jacksonville and international travel agencies to help promote Jacksonville as a destination not only for regular tourism but also to invite teams form all over the world to look at the city as a possible venue for pre season training camps or post season trips.

Jacksonville offers some of the greatest golf course in the world along with the NFL Team the Jacksonville Jaguars and many other local attractions etc. With it also being only 2 hours drive from Orlando, 1 hour from Daytona Beach and 30 minutes to the Historic City of St Augustine, the amount of things to do while in the city is endless.

We invite you all to check out our website at www.jaxaxe.com and to also visit our sponsors and search the city of Jacksonville if you are even thinking of traveling to the United States.

Please enjoy the photos of our team and we hope that we have your support in trying to expand the sport of Rugby League around the globe.

Daryl Spinner Howland,
Jacksonville Axemen.

Press Release 20/05/2006
Yesterday marked a huge step for the American National Rugby League (AMNRL). The Jacksonville Axemen traveled to Washington DC to play in their first ever game.

It marked the start of true National Expansion. With the Florida based team flying for ALL their home games and ALL visiting teams need to fly to Jacksonville, it is evidence that the entire league is committed to the expansion of the sport of Rugby League to ALL of America.

The day went of perfectly. All Axemen players arrived at the Airport on time and flights run on time all day THANK YOU AIRTRAN. The DC Slayers provided a great venue for the game, a great post match venue and hospitality to go with it and lastly, all players provided a VERY entertaining game of Rugby League.

The Jacksonville T-Mobile Axemen are operating 100% from their own budget and all travel arrangements and costs, car rentals, uniforms, etc are covered by the team. Our players are now left to concentrate only on playing and competing for position each week.

We believe that this is the start of a new era for the American National Rugby League and the future of the sport here in the USA.

The T-Mobile Axemen would like, at this time, to formally extend a thank you to the following because so many people laid down so much before us to make is a reality.

David Niu, Bill Hansbury, Jeff Preston, Dan MacCaffery, Fred Backhaus, Ryan McGough, Rob Balachandran, etc, etc, (sorry if I did not put you all down but there are so many) that have been at this game since it's beginning in the USA. You are all the "fathers" of the sport here and I hope that this expansion does something to give you the feeling that it has all been worthwhile.

ALL of you are the reason we are here.

All the teams. Glen Mills Bulls, New Jersey Sharks, Philly Fight, New York Knights, DE Valley Mantarays, Northern Raiders, CT Wildcats and the DC Slayers and all those who have done so much with each of those clubs. The Sponsors, fans and players.

To the expansion teams this year, The Warriors and The Boston Braves.

All the current administrators like Rich Portale, Tom Collins, Snowy Niu, Dave DiValerio, Adam, Mike, Blair, etc, etc, etc, the list is endless. (Again sorry if I did not write you all)

All of you have given countless hours of your time and massive amounts of effort in so many ways both on and off the field and we are honored and humbled to help be apart of this new expansion.

ALL those players, both current and past, that have put in the effort on the playing field. All of you have done your bit to put a great sport in front of the American Public and have done it well enough that the sport is spreading every year.

YOU are the reason that people will come out and watch this sport. YOU are the product that people are now paying to watch. YOU make it exciting, YOU make the crowd stand up and say "ouch" that has got to hurt or "WOW" look at that play.

We of course need to thank all the Axemen sponsors that have supported us with this venture and all those who are helping us develop our club both on the field and behind the scenes.

Lastly I must say thanks to ALL the Axemen players and Staff and especially the 16 Axemen players that supported me yesterday on the field. You are all now a part of History in the Sport of Rugby League in the USA. Thanks for believing in me when I told you all that you would love this game and you would all do so well and we could make this a reality. Thanks also to the JAX Rugby Union Club, the UNF Rugby Union Team and the Daytona Rugby Union Club for allowing your players to be apart of this venture.

So we say THANKS and we promise to continue the effort to expand the game, increase the fan base and most importantly put are MORE exciting product on the field to make even more people say "WOW!"

Daryl Spinner Howland and Drew Slover.
