Thornetts strength at fullback made him a feared opponent. He was strong and nuggety, and difficult to tackle. He played in an era of great fullbacks ... Les Johns, Graeme Langlands and Keith Barnes.

He made the Kangaroo tour in 63 and played with his brother Dick. The first brothers to play together for Australia since the Farnsworth brothers in 1912.
