I grew up in Cairns, Far North Queensland and Kevin Ward was my favourite player growing up. He was as hard as nails, fit, could pop a pass and never seemed to have a bad game. He was revered by Manly supporters and he received many paludits from the press in Australia as well as the ordinary fan.

I went to school with a bloke who was drinking with this Pommy bloke in a bar in Cairns the night that the Great Britain team played North Queensland at Parramatta Park. My mate said he was a great fella and bought him a beer, and my mate returned the gesture. Turns out it was Kevin Ward and my mate said he was very humble, polite and totally down to earth.

As much as I hated the Pre Super League Manly, Kevin Ward and Fatty were my heroes. He was an absolute legend.
